Zabu encountered a youthful boy named Kevin Plunder as he was going to be attacked by a group of Person-Apes. Zabu saved Kevin, and the two turned companions. Zabu safeguarded the boy as he grew to adulthood, and at some point took over the name Ka-Zar, which implies "Son in the Tiger"
